Grieg, like many Norwegian artists of his day, spent some time in Copenhagen. His Op.5 is set to texts by Hans Christian Andersen, and was given as a wedding present to his wife Nina. As far as honeymoon gifts from husband to wife go, this is as good as it gets. And who would not melt like honey upon hearing what would become a world hit – I Love You.
There’ll be more Nordic bel canto in the footsteps of Jussi Bjørling with Tødenes. The Nordic bel canto will be followed by Italian Chanson, in one of Berio’s many Sequenzas for a whole range of solo instruments, in this case the accordion.
After this comes an endearing and mysterious trio by our festival composer: Schattenlinie, written for Leif Ove Andsnes and Lars Anders Tomter with a variety of different clarinettists over several years.
Following the break, we shall be hearing Schubert’s wonderful Piano Trio in B-flat major. At heart it’s a work of jubilation, but which shifts between major and minor when you least expect it.
