This concert begins and ends with the clarinet. Gade and Schumann can be said to resemble one another in their warm, romantic, tonal language, and the format here is domestic, the music of the parlour.
Alongside his great and distinctive symphonies, Carl Nielsen also left us a treasure trove of songs of the catchy and folksy kind. And we’re letting Nielsen’s favourite composer, Mozart, conclude the concert with his Quintet for Clarinet and Strings. Sublime but genial, divine but familiar. As Carl Nielsen said of Mozart: ´He didn’t build palaces, but he filled the old houses with warmth´.
